Law 218: Analytical Methods for Effective Client Representation

This pilot course will focus on several of the techniques utilized by practicing lawyers in developing effective argumentation and sound legal advice during the process of client representation. Students will be introduced to decision analysis and the use of decision trees to review litigation strategies and settlement offers. There will be an overview of the functions of contracts and a toolbox for designing agreements that will accomplish clients objectives and avoid common pitfalls in drafting. Next we will cover basic analytical skills often associated with business practices such as the interpretation of financial statements, time value of money and the relationship of risk and return. If time permits we will introduce students to the fundamentals of a statistical analysis, with a focus on the basic element of descriptive statistics, sampling estimation and survey design.
