W. A. Cawley, '91 - 1942-2008

Cawley, W. Allen, Jr. “Al” age 65 of Waterford died February 3, 2008 after a long term illness. He leaves his bride of 18 years Dawn (Saffron), son Michael, daughter Courtney, stepson Brian Clifton, many dear friends around the country and family in N.J. Only child of the late Willard Allen, Sr. & Helen Vera Cawley.  He was the recipient of a rare triple organ transplant in April 2000. Al was a standout athlete in his hometown of Penns Grove, N.J. He briefly attended Penn State University and graduated from West Virginia University where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a Captain in the USMC and led his platoon during the notorious Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Al moved to Waterford where he was an owner and operator of Howland’s Trailer Service before becoming an Attorney at age 50. He was a volunteer firefighter, long term Waterford Civil Service Commissioner and member of various Veterans organizations. A WWII historian he was also known for his insightfulness, sense of humor, love of Penn State Football, golf, writing, bridge and chess.
