UDM and EL TECNOLÓGICO DE MONTERREY IN MEXICO LAUNCH JD/LED

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (UDM) and the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM or Monterrey), Mexico’s leading private law school, have partnered to offer the NAFTA Lawyer Program, a multiple degree program that allows students bilingual in Spanish and English to earn law degrees in the United States and Mexico.  Students completing this legal education program are awarded the U.S. Juris Doctor from UDM School of Law and the Mexican Bachelor of Arts in Law, the Licenciado en Derecho(L.E.D.), from Monterrey.

Students who want to practice in all three NAFTA countries also will be able to earn Mexican, U.S., and Canadian law degrees through UDM’s joint U.S./Canadian law degree program with the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.

As part of this program, UDM will offer 14 courses in Mexican law taught in Spanish by professors from ITESM.  Any UDM student may take these courses as electives.

UDM Selected for National Moot Court Compeition

UDM School of Law's Moot Court program has been selected to participate in the first-ever National Moot Court Invitational Tournament being held in January 2009 at the University of Houston. The top 16 Moot Court programs in the country will be competing in this event. UDM was selected based on the success of our Moot Court programs over the last academic year in qualifying national competitions.

2008 Moot Court Success

UDM School of Law took home the top two National Champion Team awards in the 23rd Annual McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition at the University of Minnesota. First-place honors go to team members Jennifer Hartlep, Kathy Koziol and Clint Hubbell, with second-place going to team members Christopher Lenhardt, Khalil Rahal and Michelle Busuito.

Clint Hubbell captured the Best Oralist award for the entire tournament and a Runner-up Best Oralist-Preliminary Rounds award.

The William E. McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition is an inter-scholastic appellate moot court competition sponsored by the University of Minnesota Law School. Its mission is to promote interest, reflection and discourse among law students, law faculty and members of the practicing bar and bench in the substance, procedure and practice of civil rights law and to provide opportunity to interested law students to develop the oral advocacy and writing skills essential to be successful appellate practitioners.

This year, 40 teams participated in the competition. UDM’s success included winning rounds against Michigan, St. Thomas, Wisconsin, Campbell, and others.

UDM has participated in six national moot court competitions this academic year: The Harvard Animal Rights Moot Court Competition, the New York City Appellate Moot Court Competition, the NYU Immigration Law Moot Court Competition, the regional Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, and the Pace Environmental Moot Court Competition. Future competitions include the Wagner Labor & Employment Law Moot Court Competition and the ABA National Team Competition.

Animal Rights team members Jennifer Dukarski and Anne Macaulay finished as National Runner-ups in our appearance at this competition.

The Jessup International Law team of Robert Walker, Kelsey Siemen, Ryan Sheahan, Roxanna Gale and Jaimie Bordman advanced to the Semi-final Round, quite an accomplishment in this highly competitive tournament. UDM brought home a 4th Place Best Brief Award as well from Jessup.

Pace Environmental Law team members Dylan Duvall and Courtney Satko advanced to the Quarterfinal round–to the top 27 out of 75 teams. Dylan Duvall won a Best Oralist in the first Preliminary round.

Immigration Law team members Dan Whittal, Emily Murphy and Tiffani Frederick advanced to the Semi-final round at NYU, beating Georgetown, St. John’s, Brooklyn, and Ave Maria. Dan Whittal took home Best Oralist.
