Detroit Mercy Law Students Complete Externships in Circuit Courts

October 12, 2021

Over the summer, Detroit Mercy Law Students completed externships in judge’s chambers in Circuit Courts.

“I learned countless lessons while participating in my externship, including what the judicial decision-making process entails, how to research effectively, and how criminal law issues can be extremely complex. I am grateful for Detroit Mercy Law’s emphasis on hands-on lawyering and their connections within the city of Detroit to make these experiences possible.”

“At the 16th Circuit Court, I was able to experience the pace with which Judge Viviano moves through her docket in order to give as many individuals access to justice as possible. Judge consistently asked me for my thoughts and taught me to be intentional and specific when making a point or offering a response. This summer gave me two distinct avenues to gain practical legal experience; one focused more on honing my research and writing skills, while the other helped me to bolster my oral advocacy skills forcing me to think quicker on my feet.”
