Detroit Mercy Law Students Complete Externships at Lakeshore Legal Aid
Over the summer, Detroit Mercy Law students completed externships at Lakeshore Legal Aid, a nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance to those who cannot afford it.
“My externship experience provided me an opportunity to discover many new practice areas that I would not have otherwise had exposure to. As an extern, I observed court proceedings, advocated for clients on the record, researched issues, drafted pleadings, and more. I was able to solidify my decision to pursue a career as a litigator and make lasting connections that will benefit me in the coming years. As a Detroit resident, it was a privilege to work in the city and help make substantial lasting change in the lives of many of my fellow community members.” Sydney Gebara ’23
“As an extern, I dealt exclusively with clients who were on the verge of eviction and I gained insight into the landlord-tenant litigation process and the programs available to help tenants. Over the summer, I was able to vastly improve my client interaction skills, as I was primarily responsible for conducting interviews and communicating with them. Talking to clients daily removed the trepidation that I initially felt and by the end of my externship, I was able to speak to clients and answer their questions with ease.” Kaila Pelczarski ’23
