Detroit Mercy Law Community Volunteered in Detroit Before Classes Began

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law students, administrators, and alumni came together to volunteer their time around Detroit before classes began on Friday, August 21, 2020.  

A group of 10 students started the day working with Bridging Communities where they built pin wheels to decorate the Dequindre Cut. The Pin Wheel Project will debut as a public art installation as part of Detroit Month of Design.  

In the afternoon, 20 students, alumni, and administrators went to Belle Isle where they worked with Keep Belle Isle Beautiful to clean up the park by picking up litter. Altogether, the volunteers picked up almost 40 pounds of trash from the park.  

“We wanted to cultivate a sense of closeness in our Detroit Mercy Law community while giving back to our Detroit community,” explained Maya Younis ’21, who helped coordinate the day. “We were joined by the incoming 1L class. It was a great way to meet everyone safely since we're online for the fall.” 

“I appreciated the opportunity to connect with classmates as well as learn from upperclassmen about their experiences in law school,” said Brianna Hines ‘23. “It was a great way for me as an incoming student to be involved in the community and start to get to know others.”  

“One of the reasons I chose to attend Detroit Mercy Law was because I wanted to spend as much time in the city as possible,” commented Joseph Williams ’22. “It has been a long time since I’ve had the chance to see my classmates and I really enjoyed getting to know the incoming 1Ls as well as reconnecting with my 2L and 3L classmates.”
