Tuktom Albdair-World Hijab DayTuktom Albdair '24

During her time at Detroit Mercy Law, Tuktom Albdair ’24 was the president of the Muslim Law Students Association and Parents in Law.

February 1st is World Hijab Day, which is a day recognizing Muslim women across the globe who wear the hijab. Albdair has worn the hijab since she was a young teen. “The hijab can be a teaching opportunity,” she said. “It can be difficult at times. Before moving to Michigan, I wore my hijab to school and was told I couldn’t because it didn’t adhere to the school dress code. I was devastated.”

“Wearing the hijab makes me feel like the best version of myself. I get asked a lot why I wear the hijab, and the answer is simple: Allah says cover yourself in modesty,” she explained. Albdair believes being asked this question is an opportunity to not just educate others on her religion but also educate herself and have a firm reason for why she wears the hijab.

Albdair is a three-time graduate of Detroit Mercy Law, having earned her BA, MBA, and now JD. She is the first in her family to become a lawyer.
