Federalist Society

The Federalist Society’s chief goal is to foster balanced and open debate about the fundamental principles of individual freedom, limited government, and judicial restraint. Membership is open to all–our members hold diverse and often conflicting views on a broad range of issues.

The society stands for three main principles:
  • The state exists to preserve freedom.
  • The separation of powers is central to our Constitution.
  • It is the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.

The Society seeks to promote awareness of these principles in the University of Detroit Mercy community and beyond, while maintaining an academic atmosphere that is open to alternative viewpoints.

Our goal is to encourage the open exchange of ideas on campus. As such, the Society does not hold stances on policy issues, endorse nominees or candidates, adopt political stances, advocate for political outcomes, nor lobby for legislation. The Society steadfast in its stance to act as a platform for conversation, rather than as a political organization.

If you are interested in learning more about our organization or have questions regarding joining, feel free to contact any Executive Board members.
