National Lawyers Guild

The National Lawyers Guild Detroit Mercy Law chapter seeks to bring together law students dedicated to harnessing the law as a tool to advance social justice and social movements. As the nation’s first racially integrated bar association, the NLG has a long history of standing with social movements that challenge systemic criminalization and marginalization of people of color.

Our aim is to coalition build amongst organizations fighting to safeguard and extend the rights of workers, women, LGBTQIA people, farmers, people with disabilities and people of color. We wish to connect law students with those who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them. We see the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression. Our organization is an anti-racist, anti-militaristic, anti-colonialist collective of law students dedicated to the liberation of all people – from Ferguson to Palestine – and we invite you to join us.
