  Types of Assistance

  Loans

  The most common type of financial assistance is in the form of loans. There are federal and private educational loans available to assist students in financing their law degrees. For more information about these, please visit the Loans section of our website.

  Bar Study Loans are also available for alumni to assist them in focusing on the bar exam. For more information about Bar Study Loans, please visit the Information for Graduating Students section of our website.

  Scholarships

  Scholarships are funds that are awarded to a student and are generally based on merit, talent, or service rather than on financial need. Scholarships may be available both from University and outside sources. Scholarships must be considered part of a student's total financial aid package as they are resources to be used for the student's educational costs. Students are responsible to notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside scholarships or other resources they receive so that their awards can be adjusted to accommodate the outside funding. 

  Student Employment Programs

  Through either need-based federal work-study or through institutional student employment (not based on need), on-campus employment offers law students the opportunity to work in a position that may be available at Detroit Mercy. Students should only pursue employment while attending classes if it does not interfere with their pursuit of academic success. A job can help defray the costs associated with enrollment in law school and reduce the need for student loans. There is a limited number of positions working as Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants, Clinic Assistants, Library Assistants, and Office Assistants.

  Students who demonstrate financial need may be employed at Detroit Mercy Law through the Federal Work-Study program for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the regular academic year. Students desiring a work-study award are encouraged to submit their FAFSA before April 1 each year as funds are limited. Law students who qualify for work-study funds may find positions at the School of Law or in law-related jobs with nonprofit agencies.

  Vocational Rehabilitation Programs
  Students needing training as part of vocational rehabilitation should begin by contacting Michigan Rehabilitation Services, a part of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

  Accept your Financial Aid Award

  1. Log in to My Portal
  2. Click on "Student Profile"
  3. Select "Financial Aid" from the left column
  4. On the Financial Aid landing page, you will see any missing requirements. If you have not completed these, make sure to do those right away
  5. Next, choose Award Offer Tab
  6. Review your Cost of Attendance - this includes your direct and indirect costs
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the page where you will see the federal financial aid that was offered to you
  8. You can accept, modify, or reject these as you choose

  Important: If you have accepted loans, you must complete the listed requirements or the loan funds will not pay out to your account.

  Have your financial aid refund direct deposited

  If you are using financial aid for your indirect expenses, you will be refunded any remaining balance after your University tuition and fees are paid. The fastest way to receive the refund is to have your funds direct deposited to your US bank account.

  1. Log in to My Portal
  2. Click on "Personal Profile"
  3. Choose "Direct Deposit"
  4. Select "Add New"
  5. Input your bank routing number, account number, and account type
  6. Check the box authorizing the University to initiate direct credits on your behalf
  7. Choose "Save New Deposit"

  Note: If you choose not to participate in direct deposit, your refund check will be mailed to your address as listed in your personal profile.

  Get proof of enrollment

  1. Log in to  My Portal
  2. Click on "Student Profile"
  3. Click on "Student Records."
  4. Click on "National Clearing House" (NCH). You will be re-directed to the NCH website.
  5. Click on "Students and Alumni" (top of page).
  6. Click on "Verify Current Enrollment."
  7. Enter your personal information.
  8. Print your proof of enrollment.

  View your account balance

  1. Log in to My Portal.
  2. Click on "Student Profile."
  3. Click on "Student Account."
  4. Select the breakdown of your student account you would like to see.

  Payment Deadline

  Payment is due on the first day of classes each semester. If you are mailing your payment, please mail it two weeks before the start of the semester to allow ample time for processing. If student accounts are not settled by this time, late fees will begin to accrue each month.

  Make a Payment

  Pay online

  Students must pay online if using a debit or credit card. Students may pay online by accessing their account information through My Portal. 

  Please note — A convenience fee of 2.75 percent will be added to all credit/debit payments. We will no longer be able to accept payments over the phone. We are able to accept Mastercard, Discover, American Express and Visa. There will be no fee for payments made by check (paper or electronic) and cash. All credit/debit payments must be made online. Please follow the link below:

  1. Sign in to your My Portal account
  2. Click on "Student Profile"
  3. Select "Student Account"
  4. Choose "Make a Payment"

  Your payments can be viewed immediately after the payment has been processed and approved through your bank. Payments may be made by electronic debit to a checking or savings account or by credit or debit card.

  Important to note: When mailing, remember to write your student account number on your check, and to allow at least eight business days for the payment to be processed to your account.

  Pay in person

  If paying by check or cash, students may settle their accounts by paying at the front desk of the Student Services Center. Please make sure your T number is listed on the check.

  Students may also pay at the Student Accounting Office (Student Union, McNichols Campus, Room 102), the cashier there can accept cash and check payments in person. All credit/debit payments must be made online.

  Monthly Payment Option (CashNet)

  University of Detroit Mercy offers this payment option to help you afford your education expenses. You may enroll in the Interest-Free Monthly Payment Option, which allows you to maximize your savings and income by spreading your education expenses over interest-free monthly payments.

  The Interest-Free Monthly Payment Option allows you to choose 10 or nine monthly payments if enrolling for the academic year, or five or four monthly payments if enrolling in a semester plan. These convenient options eliminate larger annual or semester payments. Your only cost is a $60 enrollment fee for the full year or a $35 fee for each semester. You will have toll-free access to knowledgeable and friendly education payment counselors six days a week and automated account access every hour of every day. 

  Please note that credit/debit payments to Cashnet Payment Plans will be charged a 2.75 percent convenience fee.

  At this moment, you must have a U.S. Bank account or credit card to sign up for the payment plan.
